Biography

Born in Kazakhstan and of Russian descent, Ekaterina is a versatile singer and a multi-instrumentalist, performing percussion, guitar, zhaleika, and recorder. Her unique voice encompasses a wide range of sounds, from the traditional ritual singing of Eastern Europe to Western classical and early music, often intertwined with contemporary alternative music genres.

After successfully completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours specializing in Music at York University, Ekaterina immersed herself in the traditions of Balkan, East Slavic, and Near East Cultures. Today, these sounds can be heard throughout her own ensembles, Blisk and Meden Glas. At the same time, a symbiosis of traditional elements and alternative music are found in her work with folk metal group Protokult and Russian folk-rock band BM-13 Katüsha.

An active live performer, Ekaterina has participated in numerous world music events, including New York's Mundial Montreal, British Columbia's Harrison Arts Festival, Multicultural Canada Day Celebration at Yonge Dundas Square, the Toronto Ukrainian Festival, and more.

Ekaterina can be heard on Protokult albums Marzena (2011) and No Beer in Heaven (2014), as well as The Collide Project's Entwine (2014). She has also appeared as a guest artist on KlezFactor's Europa CD (2016). Her most recent musical collaboration with film composer Spencer Creaghan was featured in the movie Motherly, directed by Craig David Wallace.
